Hi ytfloyd; Yes, literary agents will certainly help you to hawk your stuff to publishers - maybe organizing an auction for the right sort of book - but in the process they will expect a cut of any deal. For a normal sort of book, you could therefore end up paying the agent a percentage of the same sort of royalty you would have got anyway. But as a publisher I would say that, wouldn't I? Publishers often might not like literary agents as they tend to get a better deal for authors in relation to things like film rights and other merchandising deals. (This is probably not going to be an issue as far as you're concerned for a quantitative finance book?)On the other hand, they are seen by publishers as respected working partners, as agents aren't likely to approach a publisher if the book's a real turkey. I'd try a few direct approaches to publishers first, and see what initial interest you can get. Good luck!
