Citibank suppresses security paper?

February 20th, 2003, 4:20 pm

Hi,An academic in Cambridge has written a paper drawing attention to security vulnerabilities in bankingsoftware development. The author (Ross Anderson) wrote on 18 Feb:QuoteI got a fax yesterday informing me that an application is to be brought in the High Court, it seems by Citibank, on Thursday 20thFebruary for `relief in relation to the protection of information which they accept as being confidential and which ought not to be inthe public domain.'I don't approve of this, so...This is apparently the information involved. (Doesn't seem that Earth-shattering to me...)

Citibank suppresses security paper?

More info, which paints a less dark picture.Proposed order from a lawyer in the US.ResponseSummaryThere is a case in South Aftrica which involves disputed credit card withdrawals in London, in which Anderson and two Phd students at Cambridge are expert witnesses.Diners Club South Aftica has asked to depose them along with a number of employees of Diners Club International and Citibank, who appear to do the data processing in England. A lawyer based in the US has submitted a proposed order banning any of the witnesses present at the deposition from discussing any information presented there (including their own testimony.)This would not suppress the published paper, but would prevent the author mentioning it. A bit of a problem since it's supposed to be his thesis Looks like the title of this thread is now misleading.
