MSc in Finance/Financial Engineering

August 20th, 2009, 12:30 pm

Hi everyone,I will be straight to the point as I have to make a decision very soon and I need your precious advice.I applied for the part time Masters in Finance at the LSE and Financial Engineering at the Birkbeck. Birkbeck offered me a place but not the LSE. The reason I applied for these positions is that I woul like to move from the Risk Management area (1year and a half experience) to Structuring or Sales(preferably Sales, for FI derivatives). Financial Engineering will be good to understand the pricing and the valuation of products. My problem is splitted into two questions:1st Am not very confident that I will manage to succeed on the Birkbecks course as my mathematical skills are not that advanced. I did some Econometrics and Time Series analysis on my first degree in Economics , but nothing too heavy. I was more fond of qualitative subjects. Does anyone have experience of similar Masters degree without Mathematical background?2nd. Do you believe that the Birkbeck masters in Financial engineering plus a couple of years of experience in Risk will be a good background for a Sales/Structuring position?Just to mention that I have a BSc in Economics from a Greek University and a Masters in Management and Finance from Uni of York, UK. Unfortunately I have no experienced friends with many years in the City to advice me so your advice will be much appreciated. Many thanks!Konstantinos

I think you will be just fine. If you have been accepted, obviously they noticed something in you. It is possible that you might not get straight As in many courses at the beginning but you would get enough material as per your objective.Take a book in linear algebra which is referred by senior undergrads or better still take an online course in linear algebra and if you could read real analysis. Try searching for Stanford university program for gifted youth (EPGY) and find the courses in mathematics. Do them in your own time before joining the program. It would be worth your time. If you could do another course try doing that in introductory course of probability theory (try Univ. of illinois at urbana champaign for the same). Another online course worth your money.

After the first couple of times things get..smoother...Just refresh your high school math and first year math and stats at uni. This should be enough.(Paragogous ololklhrwmata, dianysmata, mitres ktl)

Birkbeck require all students to pass entry exams in mathematics and statistics following an a short introductory course. If you pass that you should be fine. Maybe best not to pay the fees for the MSc till you do.I'm also starting the MSc at Birkbeck - so maybe I'll see you there. All the best,Stuart
