Certification Exams - PRM, FRM, CFA? oh my!

October 6th, 2009, 6:02 pm

Hi everyone, i just wanted to know what everyone thought about these tests and whether it would be relevant for career development.I personally do not value these labels too much, but do managers really care about actually having that designation on your resume? Also, if it's valued in the industry, which exams with which industry? I am currently doing Risk Management work after completing my MSFM, but would eventually like to transition to a front office role. A lot of my peers have taken CFA level 2 and found it not too relevant. To the extent that it might increase my understanding of finance, I am not sure whether the tests themselves are worthwhile besides being a motivation to read through the material, and definitely don't feel like sitting through 3 of these, or however many there are for each one.Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

Certification Exams - PRM, FRM, CFA? oh my!

QuoteOriginally posted by: financetrainBoth FRM and PRM are well recognized in the industry. PRM is comparatively simpler than FRM. If you are already doing risk management work, PRM will not be difficult.the logistics of PRM is simpler (the material is split into 4 exams, any number of which can be taken any day, as opposed to FRM which is offered as one big exam one day a year). The material covered by FRM and PRM is very similar (they used to use different books by the same author, Jorion, but the current PRM Handbook is multiauthor)

Practice questions were a lot easier (I mean, from just reading them ..you could actually jump to solve) than the test questions...so I was overconfident, until the test started and I went blank...in a rampage of ire and "violence" (lol)...I didnt even showed up to the CFA Level I. This experience is shared for what it is worth; both tests looked trickery simple...I suggest to study like real tests (the fact you are very familiar with the material helps tricks you into believing you really dont need to study; the questions are trickier than they looked!!)

Tick random boxes if you have to
