"Being approved" may (but doesn't have to) mean that the position is put "on hold" due to the market situation. Maybe, they just prefer not to say this directly... (e.g., 3 banking jobs for which I applied got frozen)My somewhat similar experience with a big bank (although no direct verbal offer): applied in August, had lots of interviews, had to wait for a couple of weeks until they "compile interview feedback", then, after two more weeks I was told that "I was shortlisted and a decision will be in a few days", then, I contacted them after some time and was told that the role is "on hold" and they can't hire right now.

Bananamonkey, sorry to hear that. If only they tried to offer you the role directly if it comes back to life, but unfortunately some companies go back to square one with the interview process.
