help with career change into risk management

May 6th, 2003, 1:36 pm

probably not the right place for such a question, considering this is a forum about careers in quant fin...I am a business analyst in IT (finance & energy sector) for the last 10 years. I did a MSc in LSE Finance and Econ from 5 years back. I would really want to go into risk management though little background in risk management.I'm trying to do a FRM/PRM exam to get myself more relevant in the field.Does anyone know of any good ways for a mid-career changer with a background like mine to enter into risk management? And is there any other suggestions in terms of study etc that I could do in order to make myself more sellable in this area?

Business analysis for risk management systems might be a good way in, though it can be like nailing jelly to a wobbly wall with a rubber hammer and elastic nails. If you can find a role that sits closely with the "business" unit (rather than being buried in IT) then that would obivously help. FRM / PRM might be useful. If nothing else, the reading lists would be good background. You would probably need a very good head hunter to get you straight into a risk management job.

many firms see risk management as a non-specialist discipline ie middle office, there are one or two that are specialist in risk management - Elliott Ross Associates is one, I think that GRS is the other.
