"Beat the Market" by Edward Thorp

November 19th, 2003, 10:16 am

Has anyone read the book "Beat the Market: A Scientific Stock Market System" by Edward Thorp? I originally heard about this book after reading through "Stock Market Wizards" by Jack Schwager. Thorp's book "Beat the Dealer" is considered a classic in the gambling community so I'm curious as to how good "Beat the Market" is. By the way, the book can be found on Amazon hereThanks.

If you look up Thorp's website, you will find a number of technical articles that explain his ideas.

I'm afraid I can't find it either. But it was there like 2 years ago. I remember that I found it accidentally: I was looking up something completely unrelated, and I found a link to someone's home page, and he turned out to work for Thorp in California. He gave the URL of Thorp's web page (more precisely, the web page of Thorp's fund). It was full of pdf versions of papers, some of which I've downloaded. They contained discussions of risk management systems and optimal betting systems for all sort of things: sports, horses, etc.But Thorp reads this forum, and hopefully he can tell us where to look.

The site you are thinking of is probably www.bjmath.com which is run by Richard Reid (NOT the guy with the explosive shoes). He's posted some of my work there. I haven't put up a website of my own. I just view the forums sporadically, hence the delayed reply. --Ed Thorp

The copies were of Beat the Dealer, not Beat the Market. Beat the Market is out of print, but obtainable from used book dealers on the internet (at a rather high price, typically, I'm afraid).--Ed Thorp
