Destroyed at final interview

It turns out most people don't know shit about how to perform an interview. Giving a test IS NOT INTERVIEWING. It should be a discussion, where the interviewer has picked topics and asks (cleverly constructed) questions so as to learn what the candidate knows, does not know, is or is not willing to do. As noted by some other contributers below, this particular interviewer (I've run into many like him) is an insecure dick (showing off what he knows to make the candidate feel unworthy). You're better off not getting this position. QuoteOriginally posted by: blackscholesThe last few weeks I went to 3 rounds of interviews at a hedge fund. It went well and I was not presented with too many quantitative questions that I couldn't handle.Fast forward to the last round of interviews. I meet this Russian physicist with two PhDs in quantum/molecular physics and math. He spends one hour with me and grills the fk out of me with all these questions. I could barely hear him with his accent but I was stumped question after question. He starts deriving ridiculous formulas that I've never seen. It seemed like he was teaching me instead of interviewing me. It crossed my mind that he was showing off so at the end of the interview I told him that I had a lot of respect for how much he knew and there's no way I would be able to work on something like this in his group given my limited background. Then he tells me that he was just seeing how I would react. WTF?????? I'm still waiting for a call back but not expecting anything....Time to move on...

Like mine, at least the European part of it, the life of Christians in Egypt isn't normal but I was a child then and almost forgot. It's not the the case of Russian physists. Quite often born in priviledged families, sellectioned at an early life stage, attending special schools, studying at special universities, working at special institutes, meeting only geeks like themselves. Why so? To build marvelous weapons for Stalin and his followers, of course. Best weapons can be built only by best people, who concentrate on their work and don't have any problems.Collaboration with such people is hardly possible, I know what I am talking about.Stalin and his followers.....dude, it's the year 2013. Chill out.

Chill out.Not if you are a Russian dude in mid-50's or even around 40. Born around 1970 or 1980, you would have picked up a good deal of that attitude early on. I knew a physicist Russian who is 40. He was a pain in the fucking ass and he did Java development. He treated everything as a rocket science and saw challenges everywhere to demonstrate how fucking smart he was. The whole office wished his mom should have been a frigid woman who kept her legs shut.
