France vs UK - Masters

June 23rd, 2003, 9:37 pm

Ive got offers for a MSc ISIB from Reading and MSc Investment Management from Cass in the UK and MSc Finance from EDHEC, Lille in France. In either case being an non-EU national I would have some difficulty finding a job after graduation but I would like to have some feedback about the reputation of the schools and the programmes in UK and France. Reading and City seem to be pretty well known in London but am not sure of their recognition overseas while EDHEC seems to be behind the big 3 in France. What is its reputation in the UK and in French companies worldwide? I would appreciate any comments about the pros and cons about studying in France v England. Obviously the cost factor and the chance to study a new language make EDHEC a better choice but am not so sure from a professional viewpoint. Staying in Asia and trying to compare these programmes is a bit difficult so any feedback would be greatly valued. Thanks in advance.

HiI dont know the city but as regards France Edhec is amongst the top 10 in France but really depends on your intention. What kind of Msc would u like to attend. If you want a quant position it's not likely to be the right choice, otherwise if you look for a non specialist school in business administration it could fit. Though I will recommend you to try HEC or ESSEC.

Hi,I would agree with liefje: besides the Big Three (ESSEC, HEC, ESCP), no really cool finance job to expect from French business schools (both "MBA" ans MSc programs). Regarding your choices, I would go for Cass (Reading seems to be losing ground for a couple of years, no ?)

hi tomfrwhat do you think about the new programme structure at Reading (ISMA). They seemto have overhauled it and are now offering only one degree. It seems quite good and there are more options now.Just wondering why you think ISMA Centre is losing ground? Asking becauseI am deciding whether to go there or not.thanks, any reply will be greatly appreciated.sfrizvi

Hello,I have the Ms in Finance from ESSEC... if you want to work as a quant U 'd better do a PHD... in another hand if you want to be a trader that's a good choice but courses are in french... anyway with Essec you can benefit an important network of alumnies but for the moment it does not help very much with such a job market... such a Ms costs 12 000 Euros ... and you have to do an internship at the end to validate your Ms... for info it is said to be the best program in finance in france by recruiters to work in a dealing room ( Hec 's one is ranked at the sixth or seventh place among the different program in finance ). The MS from Lille business school is unknown...maybe at the begining it was to negociate on coal market but mines are closed in this area now !!!Maybe the Ms in england would be a better choice, because you could benefit conexion with the city ... and find a job in an easier way.Sam

sfrizvi, the opinion on ISMA was valid mainly based on the former structure: due to an excess of "schmoozing" around this program, it becam quite undervalued, especially has it focused more on its communication than on the actual courses. Probably the new structure is an answer to that, in which case it may re-gain ground. Anyway, it remains well-known so the alumni network is probably quite good!B00003861,Indeed, do not count too much on the Essec (or probably any similar) alumni network in the current state of business. They already are too busy trying not to lose their own jobs! (I have a couple of friends who got positions such as cash equity trader at GS in the golden ages; they thaught it was paradise, it may well be turning hell now...). As for which program is the best, I keep wondering, both in universities and B-schools; in an interview, the dean of DEA 104 at Dauphine was suggesting his program was, while DEA Paris VI is considered as such for quant, and DEA MMME has a great focus on practical topics while... you know!
