Start up failing and applying to jobs

February 1st, 2014, 3:50 pm

Hi all,During the last five years, I ran a company with a business partner where we were equally providing freelancing services. However since the last two years I worked in another activity than Finance for the company but this new activity was not worth and as a result I would like to come back to finance as a quant but I am not sure about my chance to find a permanent or contractor position since I was out of the market for more than two years. So, should I just change my career to another field or do I still have good chance to make a career as a quant (have just a master in Finance and now 41 years old). Thanks in advance for your help,MoonDragon

Since you ask, I will offer the opinion that I have formed from reading your recent posts. You seem to be struggling with some fairly basic problems at the level of Hull's book, which does not bode all that well for getting (back) into a career as a quant. The fact that the quant market seems to have a lot more available candidates than open positions doesn't help matter. Either way, good luck!

Normally I should say that you are right...but I am struggling because I used to be an IT Quant then a Business Analyst then an entrepreneur. My mistake was to not have deeply revised when I finished my master degree (and did not know any forum like wilwott) by doing the main exercises in the Hull. Another thing that demotivate me few years ago is that good Quant jobs tend to be now reserved to Phd.I have a short deadline (2 weeks from today) in order to resolve at least 85% of exercises in the Hull and masterize the skill requested for my "quant niche". I hope it is not the CDS formula in the hull 5th edition that you consider easy (I saw other thread asking the same question...).

Just a quick update to highlight that it seems that I was struggling with fairly basic problems that I successfully resolved few years ago using another edition of the same book : certainly the pressure of short deadline has its part in this issue but I will stick my search for quant roles (I already previously made the mistake to search for other jobs that were not interesting me really).
