QuoteOriginally posted by: outrunWhat we need is an new forum with the name "politics, religion, and monologues" and actively move thread from OT there if they are in that category.Thoughts? It's heading in the right direction but a few problems.First, if this were done retroactively, even back one year, the admin burden would be tremendous. Not just in moving the obvious, but discerning the threads that slipped into the mud and stayed there.Second, probably the instances of thread-jacking would go way up and there would be enough collaborators to force every thread into one of those categories. We have seen this quite often lately - all roads lead to Damascus, or somewhere nearby.Maybe it would be better, if the powers were willing, to start a new subforum called "Art, Math, Physics, Philosophy," or some thing like that (more creative title would be good). A play on the Bloomsbury Group, or the Royal Academy of Wilmott?New better-quality material could go there and an initial post could cover some of the interesting threads that reside elsewhere. My favorite threads in some of those categories are in my Library, though I have not been maintaining it this year.If there is interest, I could help with that kind of launch/curation effort. Maybe an hour or two of my time. The upside here is that it might really thrive and if a brand new forum was getting trolled, it's easy to move that stuff to the OT. Paul or Admin could tell us if it became too much trouble. One solution there could be default position - all members can access this new forum, but misbehave too much (we know it when we see it) and you will be locked out. **And max - 12 posts per day as a monthly average. :D (Well, I am kind of kidding, but...)This is more than enough for decent conversations across several topics each week. Those 20-30 posts/day people have signal problems.

(of course you all know that Dante's Nine Circles relate to Hell, but given the Principle of Cosmic Symmetry, then there should be nine circles in Heaven too.)

QuoteOriginally posted by: outrunAh! I think those are indeed better ideas! We should think what makes/made the OT a fun place and give that its own place, and be open for new people. Similar to the brainteaser forum but hopefully more active: a collection of blogs, art, tech, fashion, foodPaul it probably thinking that they just won't stop no matter what we change?I would love to see some new people become active, fresh blood. The current topics in OT are not exactly inviting.Yes, it is overwhelmingly skewed to the downside these days. I have an art studio here and decided to get back to drawing and painting instead of trying to keep going in the OT. But I like to be in touch with a community too and, as you know, it can be great fun here - just depends on who finds it worthwhile to stop by - it feels like that has diminished a lot in recent years.Maybe it would not change and "Nine Circles" would get overrun too, but I think a clear purpose and the possibility of blocking access might help. Let the rudimentary pop culture, politics, religion, monologues, and extensive high-level geographic commentary stay in the OT. Still good on an occasional basis, just not all day every day. :DThere is strong reluctance to ban people, as has been discussed before, and I respect that. But you can't get into good clubs in NY or London without the proper attire - even if you like a wide (and wild) variety of actors, there is a role for standards-shaping behavior in creative social situations.Gertrude Stein threw great parties!

QuoteOriginally posted by: outrunIn the other forums things *do* get banned (moved to OT), so all we need is a new forum where we can also move the downside (whatever that is... Hmm) to the OT.Rate limits would also be good (like said earlier), your name is only allowed to show up once(as last poster) in the top 9 rows or the nine circles forum.Haha - a 9x9 rule.I have always loved the number 81. Even when I was a child, squared numbers were my favorites!downside is just people magazine national inquirer yellow journalism content. It can be trashy fun in bits and pieces, but not as the dominant (and ultimately only) art form.
