salary quetion in interview

March 2nd, 2016, 6:32 pm

Hi,Is it a bad idea when asking for expected salary to mention that the amount I ask is based on how much people make on the department I would work at and their experience (I happen to know that for being friends with a couple of them), and it would ensure to avoid salary tension or discepancy (both ways)? Thanks for your comments.

I wouldn't phrase it that way. Just give a number or range. If asked, 'how did you arrive at that?', tell them you believe that's the market rate for someone of your skills. If pressed further, you can always elaborate by saying it's based on friends in the industry, including some that work there, and leave it at that.

Depends on if you are applying through an agent or directly. if Agency, tell them of your expectations and leave them to negotiate. It is their job to get you that and they will indeed try hard because their compensation is linked to it.If direct, leave that to the end ( for "final questions") but it is worth asking. Why waste your time if that is not meant for your compensationwise.
