When we edit our posts, The edit date appears or not

November 9th, 2016, 3:26 am

I edited my post  Number 507 around 8:00 AM Pakistan Standard Time. Here is the thread. viewtopic.php?f=15&start=500&t=94796    But no edit date notification appeared on my post. I thought every time I edited a post, there was an edit date and time stamp. Is there something I do not know?

Took me some time to figure it out, I was wondering the same thing.

Is seems it will only show a notification of you editing a post when there has been a follow up post in the thread. The idea is probably that this will allow people to reconstruct the time order of information being added to the thread. Without editing the posts will be time sorted, when editing you are updating things from the past, and that's something worth to note and so it will add a notification to your post.

This "editing notification" is an irritant and was discussed when the new forum first went live. It seems to have been tweaked lately. If it must appear (which I doubt), how about ONLY invoking it for edits 1) to posts that are not the last in the thread AND 2) when the edit is made 24 hrs or later after the original post? (Both things must be true). That allows those of us who are compulsive editors to not have almost every post marked 'edited'. If an earlier edit changes something related to a follow-up, let the OP note it -- it's not like we are dispensing holy writ here!

It used to be worse though, showing an edit counter!

You can no longer see if trackstar edited her post just once (very likely) or 37 times in the last minute.

Yes, an edit counter was indeed worse. I, like trackstar, do a lot of edits. If you are using the Latex, it can take many edits to get it nice. If you try to be clear, it can take many edits. What is the need to highlight that??

I think the idea is that if I change the earlier post I made then you can see that you might need to re read it?

I always have lots of typos and also edit a lot, and I agree-ish. But the old forum also had this, no?

It might be doable to add a non-logging time window feature, but it's not standard functionality.

Fair enough, but what if I am just prettifying the old post? Then, do you go and re-read it? Yes, I recall the old forum had it, but the notification here seems more prominent, more highlighted, more intrusive. As a compromise, perhaps a much smaller font and off to the lower right makes sense. Say,

last edited:blah blah

Yes, that would be a lot easier to do, it would boil down to editing the stylesheet a bit.

Nice to have support from a fellow editor.  I would note that sometimes edits are due to typos, better ways to phrase something, or just cutting back, if I had too much tea and was perhaps a bit hyper-caffeinated.  Sometimes any number of us get on a roll here and can go on and on.  But consider Gordon Gekko: Greed its Good.  Garrulous is not.

And sometimes the edits are for addition of content or images without wanting to generate a long string of new posts.

In any case, the present scheme is tolerable and I appreciate the responsiveness of Admin and the powers that be on this issue.
