My metaphor (I thought that was clever) is Club Penguin. You could waddle around and meet other penguins, as well as decorate your igloo. It was a hit with our 8 year old daughter at the time.

I've been involved with a load of communities on Slack, Discord and other platforms. They all come with their good and bad. Searching for previous threads/conversations becomes a pain after a while. While PHPBB used here is considered old I still prefer the system for looking at old threads so I can learn more.
