Who buys cars for their reliability? One of my fondest memories is of huddling up with my family at the side of a motorway in those shiny blankety things on New Year's Eve waiting for a towtruck to take us to the Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh.

I do.

Probably has something to do with growing up occasionally driving through blizzards in the northern plains of America, which at the time would likely be a death sentence if your car broke down.

I blame the better reliability of cars and the ubiquity of cellphones for the apparent drop in intelligence of the northern plains people: no longer are the people who don't avoid driving in adverse conditions as much as possible, keep their vehicles in good condition, and have some survival items in their car culled from the population.

You are, of course, correct. Going to Scotland we should have been more prepared. But in my defence, it was to Edinburgh not Glasgow.

Most reliable cars in US

Subaru #1
...
Tesla #17

Of course.
I drive Toyota bZ4X executive 2024 (older versions had a battery flaw), which is Subaru Solterra with a Toyota logo (the only difference is the brand identity). I’ve done a lot of research on reliability and safety before I chose it. You’re probably going for a higher shelf but for a loan-averse modest buyer like me it was more than I could have dreamt of (comes with heated windows, Marsden!). (It has a different battery design so the range isn’t worse from that of other EVs’ in its class).
