With nine rounds to go on Sunday Magnus Carlsen and Vladislav Artemiev share the lead at the World Blitz Championship in St. Petersburg

"Reigning classical and blitz champion Carlsen had a good day with 9.5/12/ The only other player on 9.5 points is the Russian speed chess demon Artemiev."

I really don’t care much about chess. Like, I’d put it somewhere between curling and synchronized swimming on my list of interesting sport-ish activities, far behind college golf and women’s Nordic biathlon. But I’ll make a minor exception for Hans Niemann, who seems to be an asshole of Muskian proportions. And a cheater… Almost worth clicking beyond the headline into the story.

s that the guy Carlsen accused of cheating with a vibrating butt plug? :-)
I used to enjoy watching chess tournaments, but these days it feels as broken as my other favorite sports by doping. One of my former colleagues- a fantastic coder and data analyst - worked on Carlsen's team. He developed simple machine learning models to find the best strategies against opponents, or something along those lines.

Anyway, Norway still believes its nation loves chess above all else. On the NY Eve, we wanted to watch the global New Year celebrations - probably every country's public television broadcasts it. But on NRK, they were airing Carlsen's chess game instead...
