Brings to mind the warm breeze of Caribbeans - and a crack of whip in the distance… The bag with different things in it literally flattens the long heritage and history into the dirty brown recycled paper.

For historical context, one summer I worked as a day laborer at the Drammen seaport, and had occasion to work on a crew unloading a banana boat. That’s also the first place I had the chance to buy smuggled Scotch.

I met some Icelandic kids in downtown Reykjavik in 1987 and they had purchased 20 cans of Heinagain at the port. 500 guilders!!
At the time beer was illegal.

Were the bananas smuggled?

Life is interestng on the "border". Had steak from Saintsburys (on label, it's "not EU)). while otther productt are "for UK".
Heating oil is 30% cheaper, while medication prices e.g. paracetamol is 3-7 times cheaper.
Petrol is cheaper "north of the border".

I guess somebody in London decided that the difficulties with the borderless border were best ignored? Arbitrage opportunities rarely come that easy.

Are you familiar with Oskar Lange? A Polish economist of the laide epoque, who imho came close to inventing the silver bullet for managing economic systems - at least in theory. In practice they turned out too wicked.

Stratifying data by income often yields insights, as anyone who has ever tried their hand at mortgage prepayment or more recently home equity release longevity modeling will know.

The analysis seems valid enough. But off the top of my head, I cannot think of any reason why it wouldn’t also imply that cutting taxes won’t stimulate growth either. Funny that wasn't mentioned...
