Thanks for the kind words. Liar's Poker is a great book too, I forgive you for trying to buy it instead of mine.I've thought a lot about the differences between US and European gambling. In the US, the point of gambling is wealth transfer. It's important to win, and acceptable to complain about losing. Moving money back and forth with little net wealth transfer is considered silly. The difference between gambling and cheating is often blurred, a clever cheater can be admired. Credit risk is explicitly part of the game.In Europe, gambling is about individual honor. Net wealth tranfer is considered bad, complaining about losing is bad form, showing intense desire to win is even worse. The most important thing is to be a good winner and a good loser, style counts, substance doesn't. Cheating is a terrible stain on honor, even worries about it ruin the game. Credit risk is outside the game, not paying gambling debts is almost as bad as cheating.Obviously these are wild generalizations that don't apply at all times and places, and certainly not to all people from these places. But they are strong ideas not just among gamblers but embedded in literature and folklore and news interpretation.
