At Essex you can take courses on DSP and machine learning/data mining. I wonder as these course are offered by the CS dept and not an Elec Eng dept they might be very interesting but too wishy washy to equip with the quantitative skills needed for practical usage in industry.QMC graduates average the 4th highest incomes of anywhere in the UK.... - This would be for all subjects and all professions right? I presume thats not the case when looking specifically at finance esp quant finance.Also regarding your point about PhD Finance at Sydney, isnt Sydney Austraila's largest financial centre -or did you mean it would be a good choice if there was an industry component linked with the programme?

Definitely agree that PhD in computational finance from Essex is suprisingly good as a course - but of course it is really not regarded as a brilliant university - one thing that I would say is that if you want a quant job then a PhD anywhere coupled with the right headhunter works pretty well as long as you are good - quant interviews as opposed to a lot of trading interviews etc are a lot more about wether you can actually do stuff rather than where you went to university
