To be more explicit: 420 concurrent users might be an impressive measure of the community. However, it can not possibly an extreme burden for the server with the kind of activity and content on this site. While the volume of activity on the off-topic forums might seem to some folks like an extreme amount to have to sift through as a user, it can't possibly be of such a volume as to be the cause of the server slowdown. The problem must be contention with other non-Wilmott burdens upon the machine. You should insist that RackSpace audit the system and its connectivity to the backbone. If the server itself is not saturated, then perhaps its local network segment might be. The IP address of
www.wilmott.com is 72.3.131.241 which actually maps back to a pointer record of s74749.wilmott.com. This address is actually contained within RackSpace's netblock allocation which spans the range 72.3.128.0 - 72.3.255.255, which is half of a Class B, or about 32,000 IP addresses. While I doubt Rackspace is using exactly Class C subnetting for the segment you are on, lets pretend they are to keep the example manageable. A Class C subnet range would be all the IP addresses from 72.3.131.2 - 72.3.131.254, so they might get about 250 usable IP's out of that range. As it happens, they seem to have about 226 visible IP's registered in DNS for that Class C chunk, or about 90% usage of possible IP's. Of those IP's, they are allocated across 161 different *.com domain names listed below. To see what these sites are, try surrounding any of the following strings with www.*.comIn some cases, the host name won't actually be www, but this should give you an idea of what kinds of sites might be putting extreme burden upon the infrastructure shared by wilmott.com.1rstfunds 247profits 2elevenmarketing 360kc 3contextuads 411gina adcsecure advantest amiestreet arrowpub artofwoodfloors averymobile babblestream backjack betterbasketball betterhomesnj bidservice bluecompany blueservice bluestatedigital bluesupport boxcarcentral-ebiz boxcarcentral-ebiz2 boxcarcentral3 braschertech cattle-wise chakra ciacorp co compgraph consumerjungle coylehospitality creative-entropy ctpboston cyberspaceindia dalitnetwork dancom dataonesoftware dck deltadss designpresentation dfw digitalnsite dlss dolfderoos ds-creative eacweb echostone cstuning eebeads efactromedia2 ehealthmd emotiv enriquemartinez fanspots fluxcorp fortfrances fortfrancesonline forward-productions gearsource gigaparts globalmoxie goldbamboo grayhawkcapital groovejetmail grousemountain happybirthday healiohealth heck2 himatomo houstonshost hsr hubcitymedia imagequestdesign infiniteconferencing inova insideoutsports insitesales inspections intensive internetconsult interoceangroup intimategrooming intouchk12 inxite ipaddress jackfrostdesign jaredroussel jodange jpeople kaneuniversal kardinc keokee knowledgenews lamefactor lazarusgroup learnpoints lilomediasdn lilosoft livegirl manageyourdealership mayasmom mentalhealthscreening mentornetwork merckmedicalforums michem mincanada mnet myresourcecenter neimanmarcus neted nexteppe nexusonline nutrihand olympiabuildings onrpg pcqanda polkaudio primaticsfinancials pureprescriptions quotamat rackspace rci-safety red-balloon refugees revolutiontea rollback safehorizon salesace salespower1 seagen seattlerentals seisint sharetracker sitesnap sjwmd smartenergypro smbmbu sourcekit southworth suempresa tagdigitalmedia teambohannon tejonranch thegreenbutton thesoftshop toptenwholesale turtleopia tutorzilla unwired1 unwired2 valuepoint voyagermaritime web-sights webrentpro websitepulse webteks wilmott worldlux wv-cis ymtvacationsNow, their half-Class_B allocation is equivalent to about 127 Class C's, of which probably not all are in use, but you might multiply the 161 domain names times about 100 to get a rough ballpark of the scale of their operation. Round it down to 10,000 domains for good measure. This half-Class B allocation is not necessarily all they have, but its enough for estimating contention for shared resources.
