Mitt Romney faces Senate primary in Utah after state GOP convention setback
utah has an unusual (and complicated) system for selecting senate candidates.
They have a dual convention/primary system.
The convention happens first.
To get on the primary ballot, you have to either place first or second at the convention or get 28,000 signatures.
If the convention winner gets over 60% and no "competitor" has enough signatures, they skip the primary and the convention winner is the nominee.
At the moment, Romney is the only candidate with enough signatures.
However, he came second at the convention by a hair, with the winner not reaching the 60% hurdle
Mike Kennedy, a family physician, got 50.88%
Mitt Romney got 49.12%
so the primary will be a run-off at the moment, Kennedy versus Romney
