What about just good old "fluent"? (it's a literal translation from Italian 'influente', so they dropped an e to make it look like English. The Dutch do that all the time as well). At least, it wasn't influenza. The name influenza comes Italian; influenza, meaning "influence".

On that trip to Venice I found the food quite uninspiring. The best restaurant we ate at was Gam Gam.

I did go into a nice cheese shop to ask for some casu marzu. But they said it was illegal to sell it, thanks to EU laws!

Venice is a rip off, esp near Pizza San Marco. Trattorias are much better.
