Re: UK and the EU: In or out?

Do not confuse me as an admirer of the US constitution. Any constitutional endowment that admits a viable path for criminals to achieve its highest offices with a minority of the popular vote is in need of serious renewal.

Yes, Bearish, I am a Canadian and also an admirer of the parliamentary style of democracy that Canada inherited from the British tradition.

That the US struggles with their constitutional albatross does not in any way obviate my point that there is a significant weak spot in the UK governance framework that makes it susceptible to the same vile populism that so burdens America. 50% +1 for a decision as large as Brexit is a joke and the EU will make the UK pay for that for joke for a generation, if you're lucky.

Sounds logical, I suppose.  After all, Canada was a British colony.

Canada inherited this same governance defect, one that nearly destroyed the country in the 1990s when French-speaking Quebec separatists literally cheated but fortunately failed to get over the 50% + 1 barrier in a tainted independence referendum.

Correct me if I'm wrong, democracy is when my candidate wins and populism is when someone else wins, right?

Two rather obvious observations.

1. Who would want to associate with an institution that tries to make those who leave the institution suffer? This makes the EU sound like a cult, which may be close to the truth! I'm not so easily bullied!

2. "A generation"! I've not heard anyone suggest that the EU will still be around in a generation, at least not in its present form. Many people give it just a few more years!

For soon-to-be-disgruntled English celebritities and millionaires (e.g. David Puttnam, Jeremy Irons,..) West Cork is the place to be. And sea shanties!

From my favourite hypocrite, Nick “Private schools are corrosive” Clegg. Slow learners, these lefties, but they get there in the end. Bless ‘em.
