Panam was a huge brand name. I remember when my uncle took me for a drive in Manhattan in 1972 and he proudly informed that his wife worked there. The traffic congestionn was a huge culture shock!That is very embarrassing! I have a clean view of that from where I’m sitting.

Distracting?They had to delay the change of sign from PanAm to MetLife because of peregrine falcon nests. Said falcons (well, their descendants) are routinely seen swooping about outside my window.

For the small world files: during my brief stint working for the government, I was the actuary for PanAm's three pension plans while they were being closed down.
Really, the main thing I did was calmly explain to the employees who were suing over their benefits why they were not going to get what PanAm had told them they were going to get. I got to be very, very good at writing, "No money for you!" letters in a way that made the recipients at least feel like they'd been heard.
