Re: How do you deal with tele-scams and cold-calling salesmen?

Thank you.

Is is only a sample of 1. But I shall try this a few more times. (Mind you, this is how Weinstein started.)
Seems like you could be sued for creating a "hostile work environment."

You could upset them further by asking "why are you wearing that today?"

if they're breaking the law by calling you (either because you're on a do-not-call list or they're conducting a scam), you've got a free shot at them. Enjoy, and if you're lucky it might make them go away
What if Hermann Hollerith should ring?

"What are you wearing?" worked like a charm...

I wasn't in the mood for foreplay.

Daniel, sometimes I feel guilty for being the cause of your obsession with e5

I usually think of a new solution as a warming up exercise ;) Different strokes for different folks :D

The good news is that I have run clean out of ideas for computing [$]e^5[$]. Any more good brainteasers please?.

Recent(ish) development are the cold calls with recorded speech that start off with something disarming/confusing/realistic, such as, "At last, you are difficult to catch..." so you aren't sure whether it's a recording or a live person. Just had one from a charity. I won't name the charity, but it's not one you want to just hang up on. However, I did just hang up. Immediately afterwards I realized that the correct response was to play the game back at them. You say "Glad you called, was thinking about you...[long pause]...sorry just joking, no one at home, please leave a message...Memory full, please call again."

This is not about cold calling, or even spam, but about emails going to the wrong address...

I sometimes get emails for a PW based in NYC. He’s a PR person. Today I got an email intended for him about a limo pickup for one of his clients.

So if anyone wants Elle Macpherson’s mobile number...

Tough. I’m keeping it to myself!

if he deals with the limo company all the time, that's strange: you'd think they would have the correct contact details.

Why he loves New York: You simply cannot be bored living in New York.

He’s probably getting emails meant for me. I hope he likes calculus.
