relationship between IT and quant finance?

March 19th, 2004, 10:01 pm

Hello, I am curious to know from those of you in the quant finance field what the role of IT/MIS is to quant finance, if any? There seems to be a relationship between IT and risk management, any other areas? Are there needs for people who have a good understanding of both information technology/management and quant finance. I am an IT person by trade and thinking about going for a math finance or MFE degree, so that I could maybe play a hybrid role between quants and IT group (I have a CS undergrad and MIS graduate degree). But if there is no need for that kind of person, I would not waste my time and money and go for another grad degree such as math finance. Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks.

I believe that the Sept issue of Wilmott Mag (latest freebie) mentions that havning solid IT skills is one component of a successful quant's bag of tricks. The other two components are good programming skills like C++ and theoretical financial math skills like stochastic calc and option modeling.
