The Exorcist (1973)

June 3rd, 2004, 12:13 am

I have never been able to watch that movie in full since I first saw it.I'm not sure whether the reason for this is because it scared me so much the first time I watched it, or because of the issues it raised. There is no other movie that has done this to me. Modern horror films are nothing to this, I just can't explain it. I'd probably go along with the the argument that it's the explicit issues it raises.

I saw the director's cut when it came out a year or so ago and liked it better that the original. I'm not a horror fan but I do like Sci-Fi blended with horror (e.g. Alien, Aliens, Predator etc). Have you seen "Event Horizon?"

I think the director's cut came out 3 years ago. Of course I went to see it on the big screen and was not disappointed. Exorcist II is also a classic. Thanks for the reference to "Event Horizon". Someone told me that it was the scariest film that he had ever seen. I forgot the name of the film and haven't yet seen it. Now I shall.

A friend of mine had some free passes to EH when it came out and we went to a midnight screening. IIRC, I was dead tired from studying for an exam the night before but after 10 minutes of watching it, I was wide awake. Some stuff is just frightening. I haven't seen it since so I'm not sure if I was scared so much because I was so tired or the movie was just so scary but from looking at the people who were there with us, pretty much everyone was scared. Good horror film! Definitely recommended.

I've not actually seen EH. I heard Exorcist II was poor, but III was very good. In keeping with tradition I shan't watch them, though.

I saw the Exorcist directors cut at a screening during the Edinburgh festival a couple of years ago. Although I didn't think it was overly scary (maybe because we had had an introduction from Mark Kermode - now that's scary), I agree with LP about the issues it raises. They make me more uncomfortable than anything. Now, Event Horizon, that scared the billy-o out of me! By far the scariest film I've ever seen. Didn't help that I watch in a pitch black flat which I had just moved into, but still.................

Come on LP, you gotta see EH! Don't be a sissy! Lawrence Fishbourne and Sam Neil are awesome in it.
