what about a FAQ ?

October 3rd, 2002, 10:11 am

what about a Frequenly Asked Question page ? now i guess that contributions enable us to see what are most asked questions/topics.i believe that a FAQ per forum could help newcomers.

A FAQ on the Forum itself would be an easy task... however a FAQ on the issues been discussed on the forum... lots, lots of work!A very good idea though if anyone is up to it rgds,Dimitris

i was thinking of the second option.1) determine which are the most frequently asked questions by Forum2) find the best answer for each question (team work !)lot of work but rewards would be great (a sort of collective work on main derivative concepts)

plessas is correct, the work involved would be horrendous! The Forum members themselves are doing an excellent job of pointing newcomers in the direction of answers to questions already discussed. As for the team work required for finding the 'best answer,' that would, of course, lead to a thread of its own. (Greater fleas and lesser fleas etc.)P

An alternative would be to have some kew words for each thread. The total number of keywords would be much smaller than the total number of threads. The user would type a keyword and he would find the list of all the relevant threads.one thread would have "credit derivatives - first to default swap - copula - hull white" and so on.all the keywords would be in an index so the user could see the whole list of keywords...

good idea Diceman, but who chooses the keywords? Is it the member who creates the thread? What if the thread then moves to another topic (as they often seem to, one i've just been looking at has gone from barrier options to the us legal system) hmm...fozzie

Good point. I guess that the people who are active on the threads should choose the keywords. And as the thread moves to another topic the member adds a new keyword. Example:Someone asks a question "how to price a european call when interest rate is stochastic?". he gives this name to the thread and puts "european call" and "stochastic interest rate" as keywords.Someone answers and says "under circumstances blablabla you can do change of numeraire and use the Black Sholes formula". He adds "Black Scholes formula" and "change of numeraire" as keywords. Then person number 3 says "you get the result with similarity solution" and adds "similarity solution" as keyword.so months later - when the thread is on page number 34 of the technical forum - and someone wants to know about BS formula for European call with stochastic interest rate, he types the 3 keywords and will find the thread. Or someone who wants to know all the threads that have talked about similarity solution would type similarity solution.Rk:The only problem i can see would be people giving different names (keywords) for the same thing. For example first to default swap and basket default swap are the same thing, but someone looking up for threads related to basket default swaps would miss the threads with the keyword "first to default swap" and without the keyword "basket default swap"...

at least maybe could we create a "Links" page with all http references for each subject.it is true that HTTP links are really well integrated in forums, but it could be interesting to make a summary by subject
