The big firms will always have an open trading desk. So you can basically always find a counterparty no matter the time of day (except maybe on the weekend). If I want to trade EURNZD at 11:00pm Chicago, I get ahold of a Bank's "Asian" desk. If I want to trade at 11:00 am, I will get ahold of the NY desk. Keep in mind, though, that the Asian desk may be located in NY, but works Asian hours.

yes, big firms do have an open desk 24 hours a day, but not all ccy pairs trade 24 hrs a dayEURUSD options mkt is dead during Asian hours, so is CAD in London timefor traders, the main thing is you dont actually have a book of your own. you need to share it with one or 2 people.
