I think that there is no simpler way to put it since it is a lengthy process so here you go!First and foremost ... it all depends on who/what you are writing your research paper for/on. (I assume an academic one)Secondly ... here are the main points to take into consideration:1. Find a research topic (Ideally something you are interested in doing)2. Make up one or multiple research questions (you are aiming to answer those questions in your research paper)3. Literature review (Make a short literature review and identify the most important works that you need to consider)4. Choose a method/approach (qualitative or quantitative approach)5. Summary of issues that might hinder your work6. Summary of benefits your work will bring to the financial/academic communityThis list is not exhaustive.... so I reccomend to contact your library staff or supervisor/mentor for more information. In addition there is something else you could do that proves helpful every now and then -- google:fficial">

on the other hand, for lots of numerical methods problems it's difficult to know what the answer is until you've got your hands dirty and written some code and examined the alternatives - in such cases a research proposal will be more tentative and exploratory rather than set in stone
