I have to start thinking about my master thesis soon, but I don't really know what to write about. I would like to come up with my own idea, instead of just getting the topic from my professor. My background would mainly be: Stochastic analysis, measure theory, financial math(Kartaz/Shreve) etc. Do you have any exciting topics to recomend? I would like to write about something related to derivatives of course. Since I live in an oil-country I was thinking about the emerging markets of oil freight derivatives in some sense. It's just an idea and it sounds interesting. We also have the IMAREX exchange in town.Any thoughts?

Quoteif we come up with it, how is it your own idea ? I'm not asking you to choose the topic, just suggest something. But I guess it's more fun to start a stupid argument instead...

In many cases you have to choose prof's pet topic. For me I got on article and was told to check it out and make something from nothing. You are on your own until the big ceremony in the Front Square.

I will meet my supervisor and he will give me some topics to choose from(The ones not already taken). These are already approved by the institute. I will use 1 semester part time plus 2 semesters full time to complete this thesis. By the time of this meeting(jan 06) I would like to have some clue about the topic I prefer. I know they are open for suggestions, but it takes some time to get it approved.

One important recommendation - whatever you (or your supervisor) ultimately choose, make sure it's practical and useful!
