Impending Ice Age - What We Can Do (Mitigation)

February 8th, 2006, 2:59 pm

This thread is being started to discuss what we can and should do about the impending ice age. This is called this "mitigation". This thread assumes the conclusions of the mainstream science that an ice age is imminent.Contributions which do not directly address the mitigation aspect are unwelcome, and should be directed elsewhere

Impending Ice Age - What We Can Do (Mitigation)

February 8th, 2006, 3:03 pm

The science behind this thread is as follows:http://upi.com/NewsTrack/view.php?Story ... 47-2345rST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- A Russian astronomer has predicted that Earth will experience a "mini Ice Age" in the middle of this century, caused by low solar activity. Khabibullo Abdusamatov of the Pulkovo Astronomic Observatory in St. Petersburg said Monday that temperatures will begin falling six or seven years from now, when global warming caused by increased solar activity in the 20th century reaches its peak, RIA Novosti reported. The coldest period will occur 15 to 20 years after a major solar output decline between 2035 and 2045, Abdusamatov said. Dramatic changes in the earth's surface temperatures are an ordinary phenomenon, not an anomaly, he said, and result from variations in the sun's energy output and ultraviolet radiation. The Northern Hemisphere's most recent cool-down period occurred between 1645 and 1705. The resulting period, known as the Little Ice Age, left canals in the Netherlands frozen solid and forced people in Greenland to abandon their houses to glaciers, the scientist said.As stated, this thread takes this assumes that this science and is strictly to discuss mitigation.I would ask therefore that the pseudoscientists, naysayers, and contrarians do not post their hysterical rants in this thread

Alta Ice Hotel they serve Frozen Margaritas in the bar Building massive mirrors in space reflecting more sun towards the earth....probably to expensive, and we are simply humans (monkeys with over sized brains) our technology is very limited, I think spending our limited resources on "learning to live with it" is best choice, even if not what u want to discuss. dropping food production main problem: "These changes had a profound impact on early Icelanders, and they continue to have an impact today. A one-degree drop in average summer temperatures can result in a 15-per cent drop in crop yields." Increase farm land, to make up for lower crop per decar, currently the farm land is reduced in north. (may be this is why farmer is long farm land?, he is not alone ;-)

When I was younger (not sure if they still do) orange groves in florida used to burn oil to provide heat and protect the trees from frost damage.Maybe we could do that on a global scale ?
