Is there a typical percentage of pay increase when switching firms (similar jobs though the new one has somewhat more responsibilities and the firm is also better)? Area is MBS/ABS, firms (current and new) are among Bear, Citi, CSFB, Goldman, Lehman, and UBS.

Changing always means leaving something that you have build up. So I personally think that you should at least gain 20% more in your new job. Promises for more career opportunities, ... are just what they are: promises

Sometimes you leave to get away from something you absolutely hate, which is worth something and can be monetized. So you might consider less than 20% if this is the case.
