You can get paid reasonably well as a inter-dealer broker. Lets put it this way, if you are the top guy at your shop with a few decent accounts then you earn probably a tad more than the average trader in the market. The enviornment is extremely competitive - you get a pretty pathetic base salary and how much you get paid in the end is totally determined by the biz you personally bring in. Between shops these guys fight to get the ticket, and within shops you fight to get the best accounts. The good ones get to see all the big flows in the market, and so they are as involved in the market as the dealers (if not more). For these brokers, their most important assets are their relationships with the dealers so you need to know the products well enough (getting caught bullshitting is no good), and have the ability to make both counterparties feel they are on the better side of each ticket....and the ability to drink like a fish. You don't need a PhD, or a degree for that matter to become a broker, but you still need to be fairly smart.
