Do they have any debt? They only need a public rating if they have public debt outstanding.

I remember I've heard it in one of my finance classes: some corporations choose a business model where they don't have any debt... I'm not sure how to say it right... among those corporations are Google, Microsoft.

Actually, it's more like these just happen to be businesses that through a combination of skill and luck end up with tons of cash, and therefore don't need to borrow. Even if they had debt, though, they would only have ratings if they requested them from the rating agencies. Note that there are some companies (Nokia, for example) that have a rating but no long term debt--and, of course, there are companies with debt but no ratings. Rare, though.

ratings are actually voluntary, so there are corporates out there that issue publicly and do not have a rating. Also, companies that are rated are not required to publish their rating (which happens as well). However since it's easier (and usually cheaper) to raise public debt with a rating, most will have one.just had a look at google's balance sheet and looks like they do not have any long term debt, but only some short term liabilities. so no bonds on the market.
