I am working for an IB in London for less than a month (just started) and before that I was working in my country far away from US or UK.Today I was called at my work phone number by a hh to discuss opportunities. I was wandering where did he find my work number and he told me that sb outside the bank gave it to him.Since I dont have considerable exposure in job market can you tell me from where he possibly found my phone and knew my name. th

The problem is that information wants to be free and many are wiling to pay to get it. If you have ever given your business card to anyone at a tradeshow or put it your card in one of those restaurant "win-a-free-lunch" bins, then your card and its data is probably sloshing around in some database than anyone can buy. Also, if you put your work number on a credit card application, mortgage application, mobile phone agreement, then your data is probably sloshing around in some database than anyone can buy.At least, that's how it works in the U.S. I know the UK/EU is a bit more careful with privacy, but I'd bet that somewhere along the line, someone got (or thought they got) your permission to have fun with your data.

Or they can do it through unscrupulous means. They call up your bank posing as someone from Risk magazine who needs to speak to a quant.
