Can anyone explain the difference between RQA and GMAG at CS?And in general, is there an official guide to what "Analytics", "Research" or "Strategy" means at different banks? There seems to be very little correlation.

From what I remember GMAG is an model implementation group, then there's GMAG IT (part of derivatives IT) that looks after rolling the software out maintaining the grid etc. However I left 2 years ago so thing's might of changed.

So you mean the GMAG is not the real quant, only implementation?

If you mean a real quant is a person who developes new models for traders to price new instruments types then yes they do that. But remember they also have to support the models they have already developed and fix any problems.M

I see. That is what I thought of GMAG beforehad as well. Kind of like the "Quantitative Research" group at JPM. Actual quants + programmers. However, as for RQA, I was kind of left with the impression that they are closer to the traders and are almost traders themselves - doing data analysis, devising trading strategies, spotting market opportunities and doing algorithmic/black box trading. The way you describe it is far less glamorous.

Although "risk" usually does mean mid-office-type positions, I don't think StephenLi is right in this case, at least based on the descriptions that Credit Suisse gives. The RQA people do seem to be working closer to the traders, and it seems that the program is designed to train them to be traders after a few years of rotations.
