Analyst position at energy supplier - what should I know about energy markets?

March 25th, 2008, 1:53 pm

I have an interview for an analyst position at an energy supplier (not an IB or hedge fund). I think I know how to prepare for the quantitative side of the interview. Any ideas as to what I should know about the energy markets? I figured I might have some luck here because another energy firm Constellation was hiring for similar positions recently, and so maybe any people who interviewed there could offer a little guidance.Common sense suggests a few ideas - factors affecting supply & demand, long-term availability, alternatives, security, environment & climate change etc. Any other aspects I should be familiar with? Thanks.

Well it is probably a mistake to expect any relationship between any two energy company interviews. However, to ease your pain, you might want to be able to talk about one/two/three factor models and Black’s model.

I had a phone interview for Constellation last year - they were more interested on what was on your CV. In detail on your Maths and science experience... "can you go into more details for us" , "can you go into EVEN MORE details for us". Then there were some standard brainteasers and that was about it.So ABSOLUTELY nothing about energy or energy markets in the first interview... perhaps more in a second round interview.

Now that power is not storable, and all basic relations of BS and arbitrage arguments collapse; even the forward/future price relations... Know a little about mean reversion. If you can spare some time look at Eydeland's book. Good luck.

Oddly, the guy seemed to know more about derivative pricing (kernals and all) then anyone I have met since (big banks and all).
