Quant, Trading, or Risk Management

April 29th, 2008, 9:26 pm

I have recently been to an assessment centre at a major bank for IBD. It was nice experience although I have been unsuccessful. I have some feedbacks from them:Strong analytical and quantitative skills, good judgement and decision makingLack of industry focus and business awareness. In addition, some comments from interviewers have been given:Comment 1: Very reserved approach. Very limited awareness of markets. Clearly highly intelligent and quantitative, but had difficulty communicating financial concepts. Needs somewhere very quantitative. Risk management?Comment 2: Clearly smart and logical. Difficulty in communicating - language issue. Needs help identifying other roles in finance, maybe good quant in trading or risk management or technology.Having done more research about the industry, I re-identified some interesting areas, but still with questions:1. Risk Management (Is there much space to grow--take more responsibility--in the future?)2. Trading (Does trading job require excellent English speaking skills, or effective communication will be enough provided with excellent analytical skills?)3. Quant, either front office or middle office (Does every quant position need math/physics, or Computer Science degree? I use engineering mathematics, VBA and Fortran (no C++) in my project, I do not know if this means nothing for the quant position.)I agree with the feedback from the bank. It has indicated what I consider as my weakness and strength. As you may know the industry much more than me, which position would you consider to be more suitable for me? Thank you very much.

> Does every quant position need math/physics, or Computer Science degree? I use engineering mathematicsNo. But if you don't know financial maths/stochastic calculus and don't have a clue about C++, than, in m view, you can only get in a bank as a quant through a graduate program. There is also high frequency/stat arb/algtrading stuff, but from your description I am not sure you have something special to offer there. In my view, if you are asking others whether you should consider trading or not, then you probably shouldn't(at least for now).BTW, check jobs postings to get an idea what skills are required for these jobs.

Thanks for the replies!RiskCapital, this will be my first job, I'm going to finish my PhD this year.Elio, thanks a lot for the comments. Risk Management is my first choice at the moment. Some insiders described this job as "labour work, same thing repeated everyday". I am in doubt, because the banks websites and job descriptions say something differenct. Back to my question, is there much space to grow in the career path of risk managment?Sorry but I have not noticed that there is graduate quant program (most of the posts require highly numerate PhDs or someone with experience), where to find it? Many thanks.
