Do companies pay for the air ticket when they invite you to an interview nowadays?

Yes, many do.

Yes. But make sure to ask in advance which conditions they have. Once I booked a plane ticket that they found "too expensive" and only gave me back part of it. I flew with BA and they said that since there was a no-frills airline that I could have taken, they would only refund me the equivalent. And this was in 2007 when things were not too bad.
