This is the new degree title for part III of the maths tripos at Cambridge. They also now have a Master of Advanced Studies in Physics course. I got an offer for the MASt in Physics yesterday. What are your opinions on this course for getting a FO quantish/trading job in an IB? I also applied for "Applied Mathematics" at Imperial, and Mathematical Modelling at UCL, but haven't heard back from them.My opinion is that the Cambridge brand name is a good one to have which will be useful for getting into banking, even though none of the courses I can take are relevant. Agree/disagree?

courses under the "Probability" and "Operational Research, Statistics, and Math. Finance" headings in this document (http://www.maths.cam.ac.uk/postgrad/mat ... ptions.pdf) should set you up nicely I'd have thought. You should have free choice to choose whichever courses you want, assuming you're capable of doing them, and I believe you can also select as MANY courses as you want/can, and only be examined on the ones that you're strongest on. Sadly this change to MAst has brought to an end the MPhil in Statistical Science...RIP to a good course!

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I actually got an offer to do MASt Physics rather than Maths. I know the MASt Maths is good for banking, but I'm unsure on Physics, since none of the courses are relevant to Math Finance. Do you think MASt Physics is a good course to take if my final goal is to be a FO trader/quant trader?

The PIII enjoys a very good reputation, and is probably the best masters of any kind to do if you want to work in London.Bit less in Europe, but I doubt you want to work there.Being the sort of person I am, I did some research and found this rather entertaining clause cunningly hidden in a document entitled"Shit you ought to know before you do this bollocks, just read it OK ?"Students may take any combination of lectures that is allowed by the timetable. The examinationtimetable corresponds to the lecture timetable and it is therefore not possible to take two coursesfor examination that are lectured in the same timetable slot. There is no requirement that studentsstudy only courses offered by one Department. So it seems to me that you can apply to do Physics and pick the options that you feel might further your ambitions.Best of both worlds ?

As I said, this is part III Physics not part III maths - the course is based in the Cavendish rather than the DAMTP/DPMMS. I can take courses from part III maths, but only quantum field theory and advanced quantum field theory, none of the mathematical finance stuff unfortunately. If you're interested in becoming a quant, why aren't you doing a more relevant masters? Your course seems tailored for those who want to stay in academia.

Firstly, I want to try my hand at physics, I just want to keep my options open since I know physics jobs are few and far between.Secondly, I'm a poor boy and don't have 35k to pay for a math finance msc. I couldn't even source that kind of money. Thirdly, you can learn the stuff in a math finance MSc pretty easily by self-study.

Of course you could do the PIII and the CQF...Either way I don't think this is a bad move.

if you do the masters in applied math, afterwards you will have to do another MFE.
