Has anyone ever plotted the rate of "end of an era" events? What about the mean duration of eras? And what about declarations of "new eras" that fade and never have a matching "end of an era" or "end of an era" events that were never remarked at their beginnings. We need a birth/death model for eras....

When they set up the guillotine and you are packed into a tumbrel with your closest political friends and business associates headed in its direction, the end of an era is nigh. Personally, in the current lifecycle, I am thinking March 2001, but somehow I escaped and survived!

Then we have Viconian cycles. Quote(1) the Theocratic or Divine Age of gods, represented in primitive society by the family life of the cave, to which the voice of God (thunder) has driven mankind; (2)the Aristocratic or Heroic Age of heroes, charactized by incessant conflict between the ruling patricians and their subject plebeians; (3) the Democratic Age of people, in which rank and privilege have finally been eradicated by the revolutions of the preceding age. These three ages are typified by the institutions of birth, marriage and burial respectively. In Vico, they are followed by a short period of chaos caused by the collapse of democratric society, which is inherently corrupt. Out of this chaos a new cycle in initiated by the ricorso, or "return", to the Theocratic Age. In FW, Joyce elevated the lacuna between successive cycles into a fourth age: the Chaotic Age. Vico's theory is applied to the image of the history of mankind as depicted in Earwicker's dream. The four phases also symbolize the four evangelists, the four points of the compass and the four provinces of Ireland. Always good to put things into perspective now and again.

Hehe, Generated by Google - this chart could be aimed at its competitiors. And the relevant date would be 2004, not 2003."Google's initial public offering took place on August 19, 2004. The company offered 19,605,052 shares at a price of $85 per share. Shares were sold in a unique online auction format using a system built by Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse, underwriters for the deal. The sale of $1.67 billion gave Google a market capitalization of more than $23 billion."

It's not Bush and it's not Google. This just proves that random data collection from the internet may not mean as much as one would like!86 of the 140+ hits for "2003 was the end of an era" refer to the demolition of the Hollywood Star Lanes bowling alley which was home to the filming of "The Big Lebowski."

I still think that this is a tech industry inside joke. Go to 2004:I.B.M. Said to Put Its PC Business on the Market - NYT Dec 3 2004This is the Lenovo news. Although IBM was at about $95/share at the time, not 140.If you are really curious, look around for which tech co was at $140 around 2003 - 2004, though this is assuming that the chart is telling us anything accurately.
