LTCM was never run by the academics and while being a lot more "educated" than you're typical hedge fund I would not have described the place as academic.

indeed (and the OP asked what's a academic HF, not what's an academic HF that specialises in systematic trading), but seeWhen Genius Failed: The Rise and Fall of Long-Term Capital Management by Roger Lowenstein published by Random House in 2000. (ISBN 0-375-50317-X)QuoteThe book tells the story of Long-Term Capital Management (LTCM), an American hedge fund which commanded more than $100 billion in assets at its height. Among LTCM's principals were several former university professors, including two Nobel Prize-winning economists.

Second of all - look at what the OP references: join an academic hedge-fund that specialises in systematic trading. - he's not asking about arbtrage style funds - he has notr explicitly asked about systematic, but to answer the question he is implying then yes it is systematic. ppauper - you really disappoint me with is - I wuold delete your response if I were you.

It was run by John Meriwether - who was not and never will be an academic (I may eat my words on this one)Given the context he brings up, discussing LTCM is USELESS to him/her, whereas as Shaw/Rentec is somewhat more relevant. And I would argue that the environment at Shar and Rentec is FAR more academic.

>>Academic Hedge fund vs. Citadelwww.wilmott.com/messageview.cfm?catid=16&threadid=48018QuoteOriginally posted by: MotiHi all!I've been reading around the forums and you guys have some great stuff.I have a decision to make soon, and would like to have your experienced input.I have an offer from Platinum Grove Asset Management (sort of like the resurrection of LTCM with Myron Scholes and Merton on the top again) to do quant work, with potential to develop into a junior trader eventually. I also have another offer from Citadel, but it's their FTAP program, so I'm afraid it's going to be more technology than finance. The pay for both is about the same; besides, I'm not as concerned about initial compensation as the potential to learn and grow.My background is masters in electrical and computer engineering, with a good amount of theoretical math courses mixed in.What do you guys think? Which place is better for a finance newbie like me, for now and for the near future? Thanks a lot in advance!MotiMoti thinks Platinum Grove Asset Management was an academic HF
