Andy Griffith has died at the age of 86.He starred on "The Andy Griffith" show in the 1960s, and later produced and starred in the TV series "Matlock."

He insisted that a sitcom's jokes shouldn't be mean-spirited or at someone's expense, that the dialogue not be one inane crack after another, and that the quiet poignancy of certain moments should override the laugh track. Rest happy, Mr. Griffith.
