Which asset vol? It's not necessarily that easy a question to answer to be honest. While options aren't going to disappear, their use is severely affected by ever evolving regulation.

Thank you, Mtsm! It is to trade on equity asset volatility using equity options. It is in a hedge fund. The other option is to develop equity investment strategy in mutual fund. Both are research jobs. Anyone has more input how to choose? thanks

Active equity is not exactly the flavor of the month in the mutual fund world, and I don't think that is going to change any time soon. So I would be leaning toward the other one. I would also put a lot of weight on the specific people you would be working with/for. Do you like and/or respect them?

thanks Bearish. I like people in both places. So I am debating on which is a better choice for my career in terms of career potential and stability of jobs. How do you think? Thanks!

Not knowing the institutions involved, it is hard to say for sure, but my guess is that there is a trade-off where the mutual fund company may provide more stability but the hedge fund could have more upside career potential. But that is really just guessing based on small samples and stereotypes.
