it is ridiculous that they'd give a prize to someone whose theory is being disproved on a daily basis (Fama and EMH). financial economics was awarded with merton and scholes, whose work is younger than fama's. not to mention last year's prize for financial econometrics.

equities, fixed income, major derivative classes (no need to go too exotic), currencies and commodities basically. credit derivatives a plus but not requisite. some flexibility for structured stuff. and also has to be able to cope with brazilian specifics.

i'm not really into the details of the math finance course at IMPA, but the reputation of the school is rock-solid, and I've heard it's a pretty demanding course. and it is one of only 2 hardcore quant finance courses available in brazil (the other one is at USP).

let's say that in our market - brazilian hedge funds - my boss would be what you call "super genius"having had the pleasure to work beside him for over an year, i'd say he falls into what you call "lucky with a slight edge"and i also subscribe to that belief.

i say bad. specially in the market where we trade most of the time - brazilian realbut that same boss made a ton of money being short vega last year - and i the junior kid who does the math was always saying that it was a bad trade to do...
