the asian economies were ran with bad (monetary) economic policies and speculative attack on the currencies simply exposed the problem to the rest of the world ... there's a pretty good book called "the downsizing of Asia" by Francois Godemont. intuitive explanations.

for some reason, i think the PhD is enough to get into quant jobs. when they advvertise for quants, they ask for PhD in quantitative field. .. but i don't see them asking for an additional finance degree. just my thought though.

quanto options? this might be good when you don't know how much to hedge. an example is the nikkei contract traded at the CME. it's yen dominated but traded in dollars. john hull's book on options and derivatives should have a good explanatory paragraph on it.
