just started PhD...need input

<t>Of course, you may need to handle this diplomatically w.r.t. your thesis supervisor, but how about contacting an academic expert in CDO at another university and having a chat with them? They probably have a number of interesting problems, and might be happy to get someone to work on one of them,...

credit check

In my (limited) experience, I'd say you're worrying too much - I think the credit check is just to see if you've been in *big* trouble - court judgements, bankruptcy. On the other hand, perhaps the banks like to employ young guys who really need the money to clear debts!

Gambler's ruin

<t>Bhutes, Don't know if you are aware, there's a nice way to compute the probability of a general diffusion of the hitting one of two distinct points - via what is effectively a reparameterisation of the diffusion in terms what's called speed and scale. This only works in the case of a one-dimensio...

Interesting task on theory of probability

<t>Toronto, Here's a nice method. Consider the sample space generated by the outcomes of the first three rolls of a die. We can partition these outcomes into {T, HT, HHT, HHH}. Defininge = E[Tosses until HHH]. we can now condition upon the events in the partition in the following way:e = E[Tosses un...

<t>Player, The only question I've heard about a double sided coin is the following:Take a bag containing 999 normal coins and one double headed coin. Pick one coin at random and flip it 10 times. If the 10 flips all resulted in heads, what's the probability the coin you chose is double headed? NB1 M...

Credit rating

<t>I've heard rumours of this occuring in the UK, but don't know if it's true: is it the case that when graduates apply for jobs in the banking industry, it is standard procedure to check their credit rating to see if they've been paying their Visa bill on time etc?If so, any opinions on whether thi...

Barcap Quant Associate Scheme

Does anyone have any opinions on the Barclays Capital milkround-type scheme for 'quantitative associates'? Is this a new thing? It's the first structured program I've seen for those with quantitative PhDs and looks very interesting. Any information would be much appreciated..
