A country fellow needs a little guidance

My only advice would be to truly go out and go for it. Learn the markets, work hard, be patient, and with a bit of luck your shot will come. You're only 24, so you have plenty of time to develop yourself.

As long as you havn't lied (bending the truth should be fine as long as you can cover it!) or have a criminal record don't worry about it. Although first time ive heard of checks at the application stage.........

I'd do the MSc In Financial Maths. You already have quite a broad BSc, and a masters in financial maths would not only show dedication towards the subject, but will also broaden your knowledge in the area where you want to work.
