Tilting at windmills

December 24th, 2019, 1:22 am

Within the last 24 hours Trump, Putin and (minor league) right-wing Norwegian politician Sylvi Listhaug have all argued strenuously against the terrible natural damage caused by wind turbines. Because, they are like ugly and hurt birds. And the coal and oil industry...

Most of ye were too long to have remembered Torrey Canyon oil spill in 1967, for example.

The first one I remember (just) was the Amoco Cadiz disaster. Horrible footage of seabirds dying on the beach, black with thick crude oil.

It only took another 30 years to get double hull legislation as standard, and then not till there was a disaster in US waters. Alaska if I remember correctly.

In a curious coincidence, the NYT has a front page story today on how the Trump administration quietly closed down federal protection of migratory birds, so as to make oil spills etc. cheaper. Because, you know, he is such a bird lover.

Is that an EPA thing?

Pruit (and Perry) may be gone but their spirit lives on.

Trashing the environment for bungs is deplorable enough. Getting the policies to be executed by Beavis and Butthead is the ultimate f*%# you .

I wasn't aware of the wind turbine threat to eagles and other protected species.
Seems like a legit issue to me  -- esp. when there is a proposed siting near a waterway.

So, it seems the worst energy economy threats to birds are wind turbines, offshore oil drilling, and oil spills in general.

BTW, for those interested in birds,  I highly recommend The Genius of Birds  -- am about half through this fascinating tale of bird smarts. Look up 'new caledonian crow' on youtube for classic examples.

So, the earth can die with a decent variety of birds or live with a deficit of eagles. Your choice.

For energy generation (excluding hydro), I'll guess California will make it to about 25% natural gas, 75% solar by mid-century, with  miniscule "other" including wind. I'll go with that -- and keep the eagles!

But that rests on the major assumption that the little boy in the White House won't just turn off anything that is not coal or oil, because they elect him.

Nice gif!

It will be interesting to see how the legal actions around the Clean Air Act waiver concerning car emissions for California go.

Thanks.

Yes, car emission standards in California historically have had a tremendously positive local impact. When I went to college in the early 1970's, near the base of the San Gabriel mountains, on warm days the smog was so bad that you couldn't see the mountains and your eyes would burn. After a few decades of stringent emission rules, the smog situation in the LA basin has dramatically improved.

are we really sure there is not a noise problem, I mean is it really okay with just looking at the average noise

are they looking at average noise?

to build out wind mills are more complex, I would say it much depends on also where. Many places one are placing wind farms one have to build roads into untouched nature to build them, and also a big spot for each mil. Solar power has less effect I think, but the infrastructure to for example thousands off roof tops with empty space for solar are ready without having to ruin untouched nature. Why are these not built out first?

also it seems like the ones profiting from the wind mills often do not take the costs of them. Place them close to someone else than yourself, place them in a nature area u not are using to hike in yourself, don't worry about the noise caused on others .The average noise is fine, as long as we have a high average of happiness why bother look into the details.
